Dailies Contact Lenses

Are daily disposable contacts better for a preteen to use?

My daughter is 12 and has been wearing contacts for about a year now. She hasn't had any complications with them, and she much prefers them to her glasses. The problem that we've had is that she's using 30 day disposable contacts, and they aren't lasting anywhere near 30 days. She's either dropping/losing or tearing them at a rate of going through a 6 month supply in 2-3 months. I understand that much of the problem is her age and that it's not as likely for a younger person to be as responsible with them as an adult would be. At the same time, it's frustrating to me to be buying contacts more frequently than I planned. Would it be a better option to just purchase the ones that are thrown away each day? In case it makes a difference, she does need a toric lens in one eye. I'll really appreciate any input that you guys have to offer, as well as your experience with the daily disposable contacts. I do plan to discuss all this with her optometrist at her next exam. I was just hoping for a little input ahead of time.

  1. Hi! Well the dailies are available in toric. Her doctor could determine if she can wear them. They are more expensive. I guess the difference would be there would be less handling of the lenses. She would put them in once, and toss them out. It's possible she could still drop and tear the dailies on occasion, too. (but fewer chances to have spoiled lenses) It might be good to try the dailies for 6 months and compare costs. There is less chance for eye infections because every day is a new lens with no handling or storage or bacteria from the case. My guess is it would cost about the same as the monthly, because you are only getting 2 weeks out of the monthly. So if it's going to cost about the same--try daily. Also you won't have to buy solutions. Good luck :) Gnick
