If global warming is real, why are the glaciers expanding world wide?

We have all heard stories throughout the years about how the glaciers are the sure sign that global warming is real. However recent stories have shown that Al Gore's favorite scientist fudged his numbers for the UN IPCC Global Warming council. Not once, but twice now. See the story at: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/3563532/The-world-has-never-seen-such-freezing-heat.html In doing my research for this question, I also found a web site that listed all the glaciers that are growing worldwide. See this link for the links to the actual stories: http://www.iceagenow.com/List_of_Expanding_Glaciers.htm This web site has numerous stories listed. NORWAY Ålfotbreen Glacier Briksdalsbreen Glacier Nigardsbreen Glacier Hardangerjøkulen Glacier Hansebreen Glacier Jostefonn Glacier Engabreen glacier (The Engabreen glacier is the second largest glacier in Norway. It is a part (a glacial tongue) of the Svartisen glacier, which has steadily increased in mass since the 1960s when heavier winter precipitation set in.) Norway's glaciers growing at record pace. The face of the Briksdal glacier, an off-shoot of the largest glacier in Norway and mainland Europe, is growing by an average 7.2 inches (18 cm) per day. (From the Norwegian daily Bergens Tidende.) See http://www.sepp.org/controv/afp.html Click here to see mass balance of Norwegian glaciers: http://www.nve.no/ Choose "English" (at top of the page), choose "Water," then "Hydrology," then "Glaciers and Snow" from the menu. you'll see a list of all significant glaciers in Norway. (Thanks to Leif-K. Hansen for this info.) CANADA Helm Glacier Place Glacier Glaciers growing on Canada’s tallest mountain 17 Nov 08 – The ice-covered peak of Yukon's soaring Mount Logan may be due for an official re-measurement after readings that suggest this country's superlative summit has experienced a growth spurt. The BBC recently ran a documentary, The Big Chill, saying that we could be on the verge of an ice age. Britain could be heading towards an Alaskan-type climate within a decade, say scientists, because the Gulf Stream is being gradually cut off. The Gulf Stream keeps temperatures unusually high for such a northerly latitude. One of Greenland’s largest glaciers has already doubled its rate of advance, moving forward at the rate of 12 kilometers (7.2 miles) per year. To see a transcript of the documentary, go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/2003/bigchilltrans.shtml NEW ZEALAND All 48 glaciers in the Southern Alps have grown during the past year. The growth is at the head of the glaciers, high in the mountains, where they gained more ice than they lost. Noticeable growth should be seen at the foot of the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers within two to three years.(27 May 2003) Fox, Franz Josef glaciers defy trend - New Zealand's two best-known laciers are still on the march - 31 Jan 07 - See Franz Josef Glacier SOUTH AMERICA - Argentina's Perito Moreno Glacier (the largest glacier in Patagonia) is advancing at the rate of 7 feet per day. The 250 km² ice formation, 30 km long, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This ice field, located in the Andes system shared with Chile, is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_Moreno_Glacier - Chile's Pio XI Glacier (the largest glacier in the southern hemisphere) is also growing. UNITED STATES - Colorado (scroll down to see AP article) - Washington (Mount St. Helens, Mt. Rainier* and Mt. Shuksan - California (Mount Shasta - scroll down for info) - Montana (scroll down for info) - Glacier Peak, WA (scroll down for info - Alaska (Mt. McKinley and Hubbard). Antarctic ice grows to record levels 13 Sep 07 - While the Antarctic Peninsula area has warmed in recent years and ice near it diminished during the Southern Hemisphere summer, the interior of Antarctica has been colder and ice elsewhere has been more extensive and longer lasting, See Antarctic ice grows to record levels So if Glaciers are the sure sign that global warming is real, why are all of these glaciers growing?

Public Comments

  1. Because it seems that global warming can actually cause cooling. I don't get it either..
  2. Global warming is as real as acid rain. Remember back in the 1980s, the same people pushing this global warming craze were telling us the planet would be destroyed within 20 years from acid rain and that people were the cause. They always have some environmental myth to try to scare people into believing this crap.
  3. And why is Texas colder than it is in Juneau Alaska this morning? lol, I forgot about acid rain scares.
  4. Wouldn't it just be better to work under the assumption that it is a reality, and prevent any further damage if that turns out to be the case
  5. I do see the planet's weather changing in the past 10 years or so, but it has changed before. It is just a normal pattern, like the ice age.
  6. That's funny I can find a bunch of sources that state the exact opposite. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/16/glaciers.climatechange http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn13519 http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080317154235.htm http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/dec/10/poznan-brazil-climate-change-environment http://www.metro.co.uk/news/climatewatch/article.html?Himalayan_glaciers_melting_away&in_article_id=403107&in_page_id=59 Besides due to the precautionary principle, preventative action is warranted as long as scientific uncertainty exists Randall E - it's not just a whim, it's real evidence which points to a potentially dangerous future for our species. The burden of proof falls on the GW deniars to prove that their position is undoubtedly correct to justifiably argue that doing nothing is the best way to go
  7. Glaciers are in global retreat regardless of what you claim
  8. The problem with the "better to act in cases of uncertainty" argument is that when the government "acts" it forces some people to live according to the values set by other people. In a free society you can't just do that based on a whim.
  9. global warming is a event made up by greenies to make the world stop using its natural resources .. but anybody with a brain that they use can recall our science classes in school telling us about the earth changing climates every so often .. the earth warms and cools different amounts every so often and a lot of this was before recorded history.. they do know of 3 ice ages i believe and other times that it got warmer than normal for a little while it is called natural events but some people are going to try to change it ..money makes the world go around and these so called scientist get paid big bucks to say the world is heating up
  10. OK, I'll just do a couple of them. Here's the article on how the Swiss Alps glaciers are shrinking. http://article.wn.com/view/2008/09/14/Glaciers_shrinking_in_Southern_Alps/ And here's one on the shrinking of glaciers in the Himalayas, from an INDIAN newspaper. http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Jul282008/national2008072781299.asp And here's one on Greenland. http://www.solarviews.com/eng/earthpr1.htm Thing is, for every article we cite, the other can come back with some that disagree. But does this give us license to continue behaving irresponsibly? I believe, for whatever reason, the climate is changing. Whether the primary cause is man or nature, man is still contributing to it quite heavily. We need to change our behavior.
  11. Sometimes God just likes to remind us that He controls the weather and not man. There isn't a war that can be won, without God's weather allows it to be won. The weather is often the deciding factor of many battles. Ecology just tells us that God has a purpose for everything. Everything was created for His pleasure. It is written that we will see hail fall from heaven that will crush cars and buildings. And God's Word is never, never wrong.
  12. This is what happen I think. When gas prices went up people stopped driving as much. in that 6 month period everything fixed itself. Now we don't have to worry about Global warming for another 100 years and then we do the same raise gas prices for 6 months.
  13. I think you've been PUNK'ed
