Dailies Contact Lenses

What does a doctor do during a contact lens fitting and what is it for?

I about to get contacts and I wanted to know what happens during a contact lens fitting. Does the doctor actually touch your eyes or do you try different lens out?

  1. you put the contacts on your eyes yourself and the doctor will test your sight again to make sure you can see. he will look at the contact up close to make sure it rests in your eye as needed.
  2. It depends. Different methods are used for contact lens fittings. Some optometrists like to put a pair of "close but not perfect" contacts in your eyes. Others can do it without touching your eyes. Also, if you haven't been to the optometrist in a while, they might give you a full eye exam. This includes a glaucoma test that involves shooting puffs of air into your eye. It's painless. Another test they might do would involve dilating your eyes, which requires eye drops that sting and leaves you unable to function in bright light for about an hour. I got eye exams every 1-2 years growing up. They're nothing to be afraid of. Putting contacts in your eyes doesn't hurt, the puffs of air don't hurt, and the eyedrops only sting a little.
  3. Generally after you got your eye appt, the optometrist would send your perscription to a contact lens specialist. That way, the contact person knows exactly what to look for in the pair of contacts. When I went and got my contacts, the lady checked my eyes just like the optometrist did. She asked me a couple of questions about what kind I would like (hard or soft lens) and she explained a little about each of them. Based on a recommendation from your optometrist the contact specialist will find a pair that feels comfortable on you and will make your eyes comfortable. The lady put 1 kind on my left eye and a different kind on my right eye and let me choose which one fit better. They will go over how to put in your contacts and take them out with you too! It's a little hard to get used to getting them in and out but with practice you'll be able to get them perfectly! :) Good Luck.
