Dailies Contact Lenses

Contact lens monthly disposable accuve irritates my eyes after using Renu solution?

I have been using contact lens for the past 3 months which were daily disposable as it was costly so i switchIveove to monthly disposable contact lens for 6 months. i had no problem with the daily disposable one of the same brand when putting it on my eyes. even the 6 mts one i had no problem when i took for the first time from the pack. After washing with Renu contact solution when i put it on my eyes it's kinda irritates my eyes and my eyes become red but after some time of 1 mints it becomes normal. Is that irritation kind of infection. i clean my lens case daily, wash my hands with soap while putting and removing contact lens.Is this normal

  1. No. My husband wears contacts, and uses Renu also, but it doesn't irritate his eyes like that. I'd try using a different brand of solution and see if that doesn't help. And if it doesn't, go back to your eye doc and let him/her know what's going on.
  2. Initial irritation is common from the preservatives in the solution. The problem is that one patient might be allergic to one solution while another patient tolerates it fine but is allergic to a different solution. Here are some suggestions you can try, in no particular order: 1) Switch to a different multipurpose solution. Stick with a name brand, like Optifree, Complete, etc. 2) Try a hydrogen peroxide solution. These have disinfectants made from hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down into water and oxygen. Be sure to follow the instructions exactly, because the hydrogen peroxide can really burn the eyes if you do not let it bubble out properly. As long as you keep this in mind, these solutions are great. A good brand of this is ClearCare. 3) When you are ready to insert your contact lenses (after disinfection) rinse them off with preservative-free sterile saline for contact lenses (in an aerosol can). One brand of this is Lens Plus. This removes the majority of the disinfectant. Try any one of the above, and if no help then try another. If nothing helps, then see your eye doctor. You may need to go back to daily disposables. As an aside, Acuvue lenses should be disposed after 2 weeks, not monthly. Hope this helps! Doc
  3. You probably are allergic to the solution - which can happen even after using the solution for a while. it's a very common reaction to solutions like Renu (and many others who all use the same preservative). Rinsing your lenses doesn't help as the solution soaks right into the lens. Your choices are to change to either a peroxide based system (which are a pain as you have to neutralize it before putting the lenses in your eyes - which takes a while) or Opti-Free (either Express or Replenish) which uses a totally different system for preserving and cleaning. You should have no problems with either of those. I would also make sure that you thoroughly rinse all the soap off your hands before handling your lenses as that can be uncomfortable.
  4. I had a conversation with a rep for Renu a while back. He said that Renu kills germs better but is more likely to cause allergic reactions than Optifree. He suggested starting my patients out on Renu and switching them to Optifree if they had problems. I prefer that my patients don't have problems in the first place. Clear Care is almost guaranteed not to cause allergic reactions but you do have to follow the instructions exactly. Once you get used to it, it isn't that much of a hassle. Optifree is just as convenient as Renu.
  5. You might want to switch the solution you use! I use Opti-Free solution! It is good!
