What happens if you dont use the correct contact lens case when washing them?

I used a cup instead of the contact lens case. Are the contacts no good now? On multiple attempts to put them in my eye continually burned but i tried washing them because i didnt know if something was just on them. Thanks.

1. Lenses aren't washed in the case anyway , they are washed in your hand. You don't give enough info...what kind of solution are you using ?
