Dailies Contact Lenses

Monthly Lens or Hard contact lens?

At the moment I am wearing Dailies all day comfort lens (disposable). I was thinking of changing over to either monthly contact or hard contact lens. How long do the monthly last? If I only wear them once or twice a week would they last longer? I was thinking of going with the hard contact lens, as I could stop wearing my glasses completely. I don't wear my disposables contact as much because they're so expensive! Also which brand would be best? Thanks! :)

  1. The monthly ones can be worn about 30 times, so if you don't wear them often you can keep them longer. I use Acuvue Oasys lenses and I like them - they're silicone hydogel so they let your eyes breathe - my eyes don't get as tired in them as they used to with my old contacts. Hard contacts are a bit more work as far as I understand it (care / cleaning), but you should discuss it with your optometrist.
  2. If you only wear them a couple of times a week, dailies are your best bet. Monthly lenses wouldn't last more than about 2 months , even if they were only worn once a week. Rigid lenses ( hard lenses) certainly aren't a solution either. They are pretty well just used in extreme cases of high myopia or high astigmatism. They aren't comfortable for long wearing hours, and take a month to get used to , to begin with. Most rigid lens wearers can only wear them 10- 12 hours a day. With hard lenses , you would need your glasses even more, not less. It sounds like your best bet would be 2 week lenses. Good for 14 days wear usually WITHIN a month , and half the cost of daily lenses. No one can tell you which brand is best, it varies from person to person. You need to get a fitting done at your optometrist/optician to determine which would be best for you.
  3. Just to agree with Footprinz on teh hard lens bit. I had contacts when they were quite new and only hard lenses were available. It takes at least a month to get any comfort at all and they are painful at first. You need to wear every day really to keep your wearing time up. When soft contacts came out in my perscription I was amazed how much more comfortable and easy to use they were. I wore hard for 20 years and at one point I was wearing 18 hours a day - but I always had some degree of discomfort if not pain. You don't get that with soft.
