Though fat actresses usually aren't held in the same esteem as "thin" actresses in the media, many overweight actresses are getting better roles than ever before. No longer are they standing on the sidelines as the sweet (yet homely and un-dateable) sidekicks to the "pretty" girls--nor are they cast as weak people who whine about their appearance or crack self-deprecating jokes. They're cast as strong women and with (gasp!) non-imaginary boyfriends and fulfilling careers. Some people say that this is a bad thing and that these women are promoting obesity by saying that it is "okay" to be overweight. But coming from someone like myself who has had "food issues" my entire life--tipping the scales at 185 at one point, wasting away at 89 the next, and being everywhere in between--I see it as a good thing. True, being overweight/obese is not healthy at all, and it should NEVER be promoted. However, it is a good thing that we are now seeing "real" people on TV. Face it: How many 'big' women do you see in the supermarket? If you're like me and live in the Southern US, a good 6/10 people who I see on a daily basis are obese (not just overweight). It's actually a rarity to see a fit person.TV shows and films are definitely being more realistic now, and I think that's a good thing--though it is sad that obesity has become so rampant in our society. What do you think?
