what are ways to help my nine year old son focus on completing his homework?

Despite being in an aftercare program he still needs two to three hours a night for what should normally take one to one and a half hours maximum according to his teacher. He makes "A" grades so the problem does not appear to be academic. He has extreme difficulty staying focused and finds an excuse to get up from his work area all the time. He constantly asks us to help him and it interferes with the entire family unit. We just don't know how to encourage him to be independent and focused. After being up past 9:30PM i encourage him to go to bed and wake him up at 7AM to finish it up. Today he still wasn't complete and went to school with a defeated attitude. Last week he accepted a zero for a book report he didn't complete. He had a whole month and procrastinated the entire time- despite our buying him several books to choose from and reminding him daily. His behavior impacts the entire family unit and we all feel stressed. HELP!!

  1. You sound like a caring parent. This sounds like one of my grandsons-to a great extent. Has he been checked for ADD? Tyler was and you would not believe the improvement once his medication started working. He and my daughter went through what you are. Please get him checked. Very best of luck to all of you.
