What is the best way to treat daily constipation in a 3 month old?

She has to have Enfamil AR due to acid reflux but it constipates her. Right now we give her 1oz prune juice with 1 oz water daily. Any better alternatives? Will the daily use of prunes keep her from being able to go on her own in the future?

  1. She will be fine. Try a fiber supplement, or kyro syrup. They work well for babies if the prune juice doesnt.
  2. My dd had constipation when she was an infant. I bought Dark Karo syrup and put a Tablespoon in her nightly bottle. This helped ALOT. It did take a day or so but, it helped. The Karo Syrup is in the grocery isle with baking supplies.
  3. My DD was horribly constipated as an infant and she was breastfed... go figure! I tried giving her straight apple juice with prune juice mixed in, I tried the karo syrup, I tried feeding her the gerber 1st stage prunes. Nothing helped. EXCEPT manually stimulating her. Meaning, I lubed up a q-tip with vaseline and applied pressure to her anus in a circular motion (with my pediatrician's recommendation, of course). She got over it by like 7 mos old. I don't think the foods will prevent her from "going" on her own in the future, but the manual stim definitely will so you have to be careful not to do it too often. Only when she really needs it.
  4. My baby has reflux as well and the meds that he is on constipates him terribly....I'm sure you know the wailing and screaming while trying to pass a bowel movement :( Broke my heart. I talked to my pediatrician about it and she put him on lactolose 3 times a day and now he poops like a champ!! Hope this helps!!
  5. well i learned to help a baby with constipation is to push their knees up to their chest a few times.
  6. Prune juice is one of the safest things you can give her because it's natural, no more harmful than any other fruit juice with a laxative effect. Pear, peach, apple, pineapple, white grape and grapefruit are also good for the bowels, and you can get baby versions of them all (though be careful how much you give). The other good thing to have in stock is infant-size glycerine suppositories. If you need a chemical crutch for regular use they're the safest thing - no side-effects and little chance of addiction (because they're mild and only affect the rectum/lower colon). And efficient - pop one of those in her and it'll make her do a smelly in a few minutes!
